The KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti) was established in 1954 as the successor to a series of state security agencies that dated from the early days of the Russian Revolution.  It will be forever famous for espionage and counterespionage and the conduct of covert operations aimed at strengthening Soviet power and influence all over the world.
