Vostok Europe K-3 Submarine Series K-3 (Leninskiy Komsomol) was the first Soviet nuclear powered submarine. She was built at Shipyard No. 402 in Molotovsk, launched on 9 August 1957, commissioned in July 1958 and her home port was Zapadnaya Litsa on the Kola Peninsula. She was designed by Vladimir Peregoudov and her initial captian was Leonid Ossipenko. On July 17th 1962 the K-3 was the first Soviet submarine to reach the North Pole and for this feat she was awarded the name Leninsky Komsomol on 9 October 1962. This unforgettable expedition demonstrated to the world that the Soviet Union owned the most modern and strongest submarine fleet in the world. |
